Hypnotherapy for Stress

Stress is a normal psychological and physical response to the demands in our daily life. Back in primitive times, it helped us run away from danger. These days, this ‘fight or flight’ response is helpful if we’re actually in danger, if we’re not, this level of sustained alertness and stress can be detrimental to your physical and emotional health.

A recent study by the Mental Health Foundation found that 74% of UK adults have felt so stressed at some point over the last year they felt overwhelmed or unable to cope. The good news is Hypnotherapy can help you relax and teach you to respond more constructively to stress triggers and boost your resilience.

What is Stress?

Stress is a response to life's challenges which can either help or hinder you, depending on your ability to cope. It can motivate you to perform and be at your best when needed, boosting your energy, but it can also become a problem and hinder you when you have been under excessive or prolonged periods of pressure. Starting a new job, getting married or taking the children swimming can all be happy things, but they can also be stressful! When you have stresses that just don't seem to go away, perhaps feeling overwhelmed with work or being perpetually worried about being at home with the family, and it continues for months or years on end, the stress doesn't just feel awful, it actually causes psychological and physical harm.

Stress is very common these days, a symptom of modern life, and is now the most common cause of long-term absence from work. It can be very debilitating and prevent you from achieving your potential, both professionally and personally. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help you learn more constructive ways to respond to your individual stress triggers, as well as gain real and lasting relief by reducing the underlying stress and anxiety, so you feel more relaxed, rational and in control.

What are the Symptoms of Stress?

Stress is a response we experience which can either help you or hinder you depending on your ability to cope. It can motivate you to perform and be at your best when needed, boosting your energy, but it becomes a problem and hinders you when you have been under excessive or prolonged periods of pressure. Stress is very common these days, a symptom of modern life and is now the most common cause of long-term absence from work. It can be very debilitating and prevent you from achieving your potential professionally and personally. Do these sound familiar?

You may experience psychological and/or physiological reactions to life's ongoing pressures. Some of the more common symptoms are:

  • Tearfulness, mood swings and irritability
  • Forgetfulness and distraction
  • Worrying and catastrophising
  • Sensitivity to criticism
  • Unhelpful coping mechanisms e.g. drinking too much, smoking, self-harm
  • Weight management problems
  • Aches, pains and muscle tension
  • Teeth grinding
  • Frequent illness
  • Allergies and skin irritations
  • Dizziness and/or palpitations

How does Hypnotherapy relieve Stress?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy helps you formulate a better way of coping with your situation and daily life. We'll work together, using techniques to focus on and visualise your preferred future, helping your subconscious mind create a positive template to work with. Then, by responding to external pressures in a calmer, more positive way, stress-related symptoms often improve. As you begin to think differently, you'll feel better and feel more able to enjoy life.

Sometimes it's not as simple as removing the cause of pressure or source of challenges facing you. It may be work pressures or family life causing you stress, which cannot be avoided. However, hypnotherapy can help you deal with these situations, so you can cope better each day. Often, it's not the situation you face that causes the stress, it's your response to it.

If you've noticed changes in your ability to concentrate, make simple decisions, if you're becoming easily distracted or finding yourself constantly worrying, thinking the worst at all times, help is here. Hypnotherapy deals with the underlying factors that contribute to ongoing stress and pressure so you can begin to feel better and at your best. Hypnotherapy helps you relax deeply - the opposite of being stressed - and Solution Focused techniques help you formulate a better way of coping with situations and habits in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Online Hypnotherapy Work For Stress?

Online hypnotherapy works to relieve the impact of ongoing stress, stress related issues and burn out. Working online via Zoom is just as effective as having a face to face session, in fact, many people are more relaxed and comfortable in their own space or home. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy helps you relieve stress and tension by combining positive talking therapy and coaching with hypnosis. During the first half of the session, we talk and avoid past problems, and instead of focus on the future. You're encouraged to think and express yourself in a positive way to help you think differently. Because hypnotherapy is a brain-based therapy, you'll also learn how the brain works in relation to stress and pressure and importantly what can be done to help you make changes to help you feel more resilient and empowered.

Hypnosis helps you to relieve stress by using guided relaxation techniques to calm your body and mind. As you listen to your therapist, you will be guided into a relaxed state of focused attention by asking you to imagine certain things. Positive suggestions are made to help you make changes subconsciously by encouraging a shift in perspective. It allows your mind to reflect on the ideas and solutions discussed during our session to understand how they can help you.

How many hypnotherapy sessions are needed for stress?

Typically, you will need around 6 - 8 weekly hypnotherapy sessions for stress. Everyone is different, so the number of sessions will vary depending on your individual circumstances. However, in my experience, clients are able to achieve good results in a relatively short period of time when they are ready and motivated for change.

What happens at an initial consultation?

The initial consultation and assessment is one of the most important sessions, the beginning of real focus and change. Together we'll explore what you want to achieve and how many sessions may be required. I'll explain how hypnotherapy works and I'll briefly explore how the mind works in relation to your issues and how if you're willing to make changes, hypnotherapy can help you achieve your goals. You'll also receive a complimentary guided hypnotic relaxation audio track to listen to at home which sets the wheels in motion for your subsequent sessions.
