What is Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy?

Discover a happier, calmer, better you, without the need to analyse your past.

Your Future is Both Created and Negotiable

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a positive evidence-based approach that helps you create lasting change by focusing on the outcome you want, rather than the issues that prompted you to seek out support. So, we focus on your present, future and how you want life to be and move forwards without reliving past problems.

This positive approach combines solution focused talk therapy with hypnosis, helping you address your issues both consciously and subconsciously. Hypnosis is a relaxing way to encourage powerful change at your subconscious level too, helping to condition your thinking and create healthier more positive patterns of thought and behaviour that support your goals, and the therapy is underpinned by up-to-date research in the fields of neuroscience and brain-based therapies.

So, if you’re looking for a briefer and more positive journey to create change in your life, then Solution Focused Hypnotherapy could be the ideal therapy to help you.

What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is an integrative therapeutic approach that combines elements of Solution Focused Brief Therapy (talking therapy) with hypnosis, and neuroscience principles that can help you overcome mental health and psychological conditions which are typically made worse by, or cause by some level of stress or anxiety.

Unlike traditional therapy, which may delve into past traumas and past problems, Solution Focused Hypnotherapy focuses on your present and preferred future, when things are better, because you can’t change the past, but you can change the way you think about it, as well as the way you think about your present and your future possibilities.

In Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, you can expect a collaborative and supportive approach during each session, where you’ll be encouraged to focus your strengths, skills and solutions for change that helps you establish a different perspectives and more positive thought patterns that bring about lasting and beneficial changes in the way you think and respond to situations in your life now and in the future.

Hypnosis, (or trance), allows your brain to consolidate the changes faster than just talking therapy alone. It’s a relaxing experience that helps you to overcome your issues at a deeper level by harnessing the power of your subconscious mind through guided visualisation and suggestions which induce a deep state of relaxation and a calmer state of mind allowing you to think differently and more rationally about your situation, whilst listening to positive suggestions that support the changes you desire.

How long does Solution Focused Hypnotherapy take?

Typically, people have between six to eight therapy sessions with a solution focused hypnotherapist for conditions related to anxiety and stress and find it an effective way to create lasting change.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is considered a brief therapy because it focuses on achieving specific changes and goals in a relatively short amount of time and is underpinned by up-to-date research in the fields of neuroscience and brain-based therapies.

Unlike traditional therapy, which may delve extensively into past experiences, emotions, and traumas, solution focused hypnotherapy focuses on your future and emphasises practical solutions building on your strengths and resources to create change quickly.

Of course, as with anything, lasting change does require some practice and repetition for good results because our brains are wired to form habits through repetition, so the success of therapy relies on your willingness to engage and commit to the process.

How does Solution Focused Hypnotherapy work?

Solution focused hypnotherapy sessions works by integrating several evidence-based approaches combining Solution Focused Brief Therapy with elements of Brain Based Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Psychology and Hypnosis. Using hypnosis is extremely beneficial because hypnosis, allows your brain to consolidate the changes faster than just through talking therapy alone.

Sessions begin with Solution Focused conversations, which helps you move into a positive mindset as you begin to recognise your strengths, skills and resources. It’s different from other therapies because rather than discussing your current concerns in detail, a solution-focused therapist will explore how your life will be once these concerns are resolved, focusing on what you want and building upon your strengths to move forward, only delving into the past as far as is necessary to understand your concerns.

This positive approach to talking helps you move away from your problems allowing you to stimulate a different area of the brain, an area of the brain which is great at problem-solving. So, in a nutshell, solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help you shift your attention from analysing a particular problem to exploring a desired vision of your future, finding your preferred solutions and the next step towards it.

It's a safe approach which allows you to start to visualising what your preferred future might be like when things are different. So, you may explore what you would like to be changing within the scope your reality now. For example, you may think about how you might be responding to important people in your life who may not change. And this helps you to sort out what is within your control or influence versus things beyond your control as you discover different solutions which may be useful to support your desired changes.

What are the benefits of solution focused brief therapy in hypnotherapy sessions?

In Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), three guiding principles form the cornerstone of the therapeutic process, offering a simple yet powerful framework for change, which are particularly beneficial when used in combination with hypnosis.

The principles allow you to acknowledge your strengths, recognise your successes, and embrace your adaptability that helps you build upon your existing resources and capabilities for change, empowering you to rise to your challenges with greater resilience and confidence.

The 3 Major Principles of Solution-Focused Therapy:

1 If it's not broken, don't fix it

We acknowledge what’s already working in your life, helping you to recognise your strengths, resources, and past successes which helps build confidence, self-esteem and resilience, allowing you to shift your focus from problems to strengths, developing more optimism and motivation for change.

2 If something is working, do more of it

We encourage you to capitalise on your successes and positive experiences. This helps you expand and reinforce more helpful behaviours, thoughts, or actions that produce more positive outcomes in your life as you move forward towards your goals.

3 If it's not working, do something different

We recognise that not all approaches you take will create the results you want, so we promote flexibility and innovation in problem solving. You’ll be encouraged to explore new perspectives, behaviours, or solutions that help you adapt and change for the better.

These principles underpin positive talking and solutions during sessions which help you navigate your challenges with greater optimism, resilience, and resourcefulness as you're supported in identifying and creating positive changes in your thoughts, actions, and behaviours.

How does Solution Focused Hypnotherapy utilise brain science?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy sessions help you gain a simple neuroscientific understanding about your brain in relation to your issues. It’s central to the Solution Focused Hypnotherapy method because understanding how your brain works is a powerful tool which helps you to cope and perform better.

Right from your initial consultation, you’ll gain an understanding of how your brain working in any given situation and what you can do to encourage it to work in a more positive way, to help you overcome unwanted symptoms and difficulties rather than exacerbating them.

What role does understanding brain function play in effective therapy for behavioural change?

Understanding how your brain works in therapy provides valuable insights into the patterns and triggers that influence your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. You’ll learn to recognise recurring patterns and identify the triggers that evoke specific emotional responses.

This simple neuroscientific understanding gives you insight into the interplay between your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, allowing you to interrupt harmful cycles and develop more adaptive coping strategies.

Solution focused questioning during sessions also helps you spend more time in the rational part of your brain, which helps the process as you’re able to consider small changes you make over the next few days that will help you move towards your desired change.

This process encourages you to engage your intellectual mind, involved with conscious thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making. It activates your left prefrontal cortex, a brain region associated with positive emotions and cognitive control promoting positivity and clarity in addressing challenges. And, overtime, you’ll begin to gain greater intellectual control, many clients notice sleeping better as stress is reduced, feeling more confident and making better decisions creating healthier patterns of thought and behaviour.

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis allows you to reach a natural trance-like state of focused attention, heightened suggestibility, and deep relaxation. It involves a collaborative process between a trained hypnotherapist and you, the client. You’ll be guided into hypnosis (or trance), using guided imagery to relax your body and mind. In this relaxed state, your mind is more responsive to suggestions designed for your benefit which can help change your unhelpful thought patterns. Many people experience a wonderful sense of calmness and relaxation and importantly, you remain fully in control during hypnosis. It’s a collaborative process where you remain in control of your thoughts and actions, and you’ll choose to accept or reject suggestions given by your hypnotherapist.

In Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, once we’ve finished talking we use hypnosis in the second half of the session, which helps your brain to consolidate the changes faster than just talking therapy alone. As you relax as listen with your eyes closed, we’ll harnesses the positive elements of the natural occurring hypnotic state, when we consolidate memory and make changes. The therapeutic benefit allows you to consolidate the solution focused conversation we’ve had prior to hypnosis. So, hypnosis enhances the effects of the solution focused, brain based elements of the session.

What happens in the brain during hypnosis?

During hypnosis your brain experiences changes that help create a relaxed and focused state. This altered state involves increased activity in regions responsible for attention and cognitive control, while decreasing activity in areas related to self-awareness. Your brain shifts in brain wave patterns linked to relaxation and suggestibility, theta brainwaves dominate, allowing you to visualise how positive change will benefit your life.

In Solution Focused Hypnotherapy techniques like relaxation, positive visualization, and changing negative thoughts can help rewire your brain to reduce anxiety. By practicing these techniques during hypnosis sessions, it helps you create new pathways in your brain linked to calmness and confidence, while weakening old pathways associated with anxiety and stress. It helps you learn to manage your emotions better, change unhelpful thought patterns, and gradually overcome anxiety in daily life.

What is Neuroplasticity?

Neuroplasticity refers to your brain's ability to change and adapt throughout life. It means that your brain can reorganise itself by forming new connections between neurons (brain cells) and strengthening existing ones. This process allows us to learn new things, develop new skills, and recover from injuries or adapt to changes in our environment. Essentially, neuroplasticity is your brain's ability to remodel and rewire itself, enabling you to grow, learn, and adapt over time.

Can hypnosis influence neuroplasticity to reshape thought patterns?

Hypnosis can positively influence neuroplasticity by promoting the formation of new neural connections, which helps you regulate emotions and reduce stress. In hypnosis you experience neuroplasticity as you develop healthier thought patterns, coping strategies, and behaviours, leading to positive changes in your mental health and well-being. By repeatedly practicing relaxation, visualization, and cognitive restructuring during hypnosis sessions, you can strengthen new neural pathways associated with desired outcomes, such as reduced anxiety or improved self-esteem, while weakening old patterns linked to anxiety and stress. It helps to promote lasting change and resilience, so you can live life to the full.

A brief history of Solution Focused Hypnotherapy

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic approach that blends elements of solution-focused therapy with hypnosis to facilitate positive change. The history and background of solution focused hypnotherapy can be traced back to the pioneering work of psychotherapists Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg, who developed solution-focused therapy in the 1980s. This approach focuses on identifying and building upon an individual's strengths and resources to create solutions rather than dwelling on problems.

The integration of hypnosis into solution-focused therapy gave rise to Solution Focused Hypnotherapy. This hybrid approach was further developed and popularized by British psychotherapist David Newton in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Newton combined the principles of solution-focused therapy with hypnosis techniques to create a structured and goal-oriented therapeutic model that emphasizes positive change and empowerment.

Solution focused hypnotherapy draws upon the principles of Ericksonian hypnotherapy, which was developed by psychiatrist Milton H. Erickson in the mid-20th century. Erickson's innovative approach to hypnosis emphasised indirect suggestion, storytelling, and metaphorical language to bypass the conscious mind and access the subconscious.

Since its inception, solution focused hypnotherapy has gained recognition and acceptance as an effective therapeutic approach for a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression, phobias, and stress-related disorders. It is widely practiced by trained therapists and hypnotherapists around the world, with ongoing research and developments contributing to its evolution and refinement.

In the UK, the AfSFH (The Association for Solution Focused Hypnotherapy) was set up in 2009 as a professional governing body, to monitor standards and provides support, resources, and training for practitioners whilst ensuring all accredited therapists adhere to the hallmarks of best practice. The AfSFH is the only dedicated register for Solution Focused Hypnotherapists, where all listed members must be appropriately qualified and insured and abide by a Code of Conduct and professional standards whilst committing to engage in additional professional development activities, including undertaking regular supervision and further training as part of their continuous professional development.
