Many people believe sleep comes naturally, but for an estimated one in three people in the UK, or one in two over the age of 65, getting a good nights sleep can anything but a restful experience. It can be frustrating, depressing, stressful and can significantly impair your health, work performance and quality of life.
You may find yourself having difficulty getting to sleep or feel awake for long periods before going back to sleep or indeed wake up in the middle of the night with no hope of being able to sleep again that night. Persistent insomnia can leave you feeling tired and frustrated impacting your health, motivation and performance at work. It can even reduce your problem-solving skills and reduce your ability to cope with stressful situations. Lack of sleep has also been linked to weight gain and reduced immunity. Do you suffer from the following?

Getting enough sleep helps us build mental and emotional resilience so we’re able to deal with the demands, challenges and sometimes adversity of modern daily life. As we sleep, our bodies repair and restore themselves, it’s a chance for the mind to recharge and process all the information we’re bombarded with during the day and helps us prepare for the emotional challenges of the next day.
If you’re over 18, most adults need between 7 – 9 hours of sleep per night, children and teenagers need even more. If you find you’re sleeping less than 8 hours per night, then you’re probably being deprived of the sleep you need to function at your best.
The good news is that you don’t have to choose between health and productivity. By addressing any sleep problems and making time to get the sleep you need each night, your energy, efficiency, and overall health will go up. In fact, you’ll likely get much more done during the day than if you were skimping on shuteye and trying to work longer.
There is a lot happening when you sleep. As you sleep, your brain stays busy, overseeing biological maintenance that keeps your body running in top condition, preparing you for the day ahead. Without enough hours of restorative sleep, you won’t be able to work, learn, create, and communicate at a level even close to your true potential. Regularly skimp on “service” and you’re headed for a major mental and physical breakdown.
It can be difficult to find the root cause of insomnia, but it can often be linked to a number of factors including anxiety and stress, poor sleep routine and lifestyle factors such as drinking alcohol, taking drugs as well as stimulants such as nicotine and caffeine.
Physical and mental health conditions can also have an impact on sleeping patterns. As we sleep our bodies repairs and restores itself, so good sleep is very important. At night when we dream the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) phase of sleep is vital for memory and learning, making sense of the day. The REM phase also replenishes helpful hormones including which makes us feel good and gives us a boost.
